Amen, Judge Challeen! I sat in on many of Judge Challeen's sentencing hearings while I was a paralegal intern for the public defenders office in the last 80's. Judge Challeen had it right then and he has it right now when he says: "But for the vast majority of chronic offenders that irritate, annoy and anger us, we must teach responsibility, re-educate, civilize, change their erroneous beliefs and show them a road map to normal behavior they never learned in their childhood — behavior most law-abiding citizens fortunately learned on the way to adulthood."
I recently enjoyed listening to "The Elders" a Irish-American band. During their concert the said what this country needs is a few more nuns with "steel-capped boots, who kick you in the backside just to shine their shoes." If we took a little more time as parents to "get to the seat of the problem" early on we could put 80% of the criminal justice system out of business.
This is not a new concept, go to the orginal owner's manual where this issue was also addressed: Proverbs 13:23-25 "A poor man's field may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away. He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. The righteous eat to their hearts' content, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry."
