 Township elections were held March 11 across Minnesota, and also in the 17 townships that make up Houston County. The following are the election votes The Argus was able to obtain:

Black Hammer

A total of 35 votes were cast in the election. Incumbent James Solum was elected to a three-year supervisor term. He received 20 votes, while challenger Brian Lavelle received 15. Incumbent clerk Tilford Ike did not run for re-election, since he moved out of the township. No one filed, and the position was open to write-in votes. Lavelle received three votes, while Mark Rud, Thomas Andrews, Joel Rosaaen, Sharon Wiste, and Larry Wiste each received one for the two-year term. Lavelle declined the office. The five persons each receiving one vote were contacted to see if they would take the job. Andrews said he would.

Brownsville

According to clerk Doris Mitchell, 11 votes were cast. Mitchell received 11 votes for the two-year clerk’s term, while incumbent William Sheehan also received 11 votes for the three-year supervisor’s term.

Caledonia

A total of 27 votes were cast. Incumbent clerk Holly Klankowski received 27 votes and was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term, while incumbent Kermit McRae received 27 votes and was re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term.

Crooked Creek

According to clerk Andre Moen, 35 votes were cast. Moen received 33 votes and was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term. The supervisor’s position was being vacated by Lloyd Lampert, who retired after serving 36 years on the board. Winnes won on a write-in vote 17-14 over Russell Goetzinger, who had filed for the position. Moen noted the original supervisor’s vote ended in a tie in the preliminary count, which was tabulated before the annual meeting. Following the annual meeting, the canvassing board met and went over the votes. It was determined Winnes had won by a 17-14 margin. Both Winnes and Goetzinger were contacted with the official results and were give notice of their right to contest the results. Neither candidate wanted to contest the results.

Hokah

According to clerk Ruth Horihan, there were 20 votes cast. Horian was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term with 20 votes, while incumbent Richard Markos was re-elected to a three year supervisor’s term with 20 votes. 

Houston

A total of 14 votes were casts in Houston Township with incumbent clerk Christine Rishette elected to another two-year term with 14 votes and incumbent supervisor John Bekcman re-elected to another three-year term with 14 votes.

Jefferson

Clerk George Mauss reported 16 votes were cast. Mauss was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term with 16 votes. Ed Hammell was elected to the three-year supervisor’s term with 15 votes. Jim Hammell received one vote for supervisor.

La Crescent

Three supervisors and a clerk were elected with 19 votes cast. Incumbents Bob Cummings and Bill Beckman both received 19 votes and were re-elected to three-year supervisor’s terms. Tom Wright received 17 votes and was elected to fill out the two years remaining on former supervisor Larry Hafner’s term. Incumbent clerk Karen Schuldt was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term.

Mayville

According to clerk Glenn Meiners, 56 votes were cast. Meiners was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term with 54 votes. Lucille Lemke received two votes. Incumbent Maynard Welscher was re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term with 56 votes.

Money Creek

According to clerk Michelle Quinn, 26 votes were cast, with Quinn re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term, and incumbent Richard Torgerson re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term. There was one write-in vote.

Mound Prairie

Clerk Red Haines reported 27 votes were cast. Haines was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term with 27 votes. Incumbent Lester Beckman was re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term with 26 votes.

Sheldon

According to clerk Sherry Jergenson 60 votes were cast. Incumbent supervisor Dale Runningen was re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term with 37 votes. Larry Thorson received 20 votes in a write-in campaign, while Doug Jore received one. Jergenson was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term with 54 votes. Coleen Nelson received one vote.

Spring Grove

A total of 26 votes were cast.  Incumbent clerk/treasurer Michael Wiste was re-elected for a two-year term with 26 votes. Incumbent Mike Patterson was re-elected with 24 votes for a three-year supervisor’s term. Roger Peterson received one vote.

Union

According to clerk Dennis Conniff, nine votes were cast. Conniff was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term with nine votes. Incumbent Jerry Frank was re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term with nine votes.

Wilmington

A total of 19 votes were cast. Incumbent Marilyn Sylling was re-elected to a two-year clerk/treasurer term with 19 votes. Incumbent Kenneth Meyer was re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term with 14 votes. Tom Gerard received three write-in votes, while Verdon Olson received one.

Winnebago

According to clerk Joyce Staggemeyer 12 votes were cast. Staggemeyer was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term with 10 votes. Dale Horn was re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term with 12 votes.

Yucatan

Yucatan clerk Sandra Ask reported 94 votes cast. Ask was re-elected to a two-year clerk’s term with 79 votes. Linda Griggs received six write-in votes. Larry Gaustad was re-elected to a three-year supervisor’s term with 71 votes. Griggs received 21 votes.
