Sheriff Ely announces extra patrol during Prom |
|
|
The Houston County Sheriff’s Office will be putting extra deputies on the road this prom season looking for violation of underage consumption of alcohol. Two additional deputies will be assigned extra duty on Apr. 26, and May 3.
These deputies will be assigned the task of working the areas of Houston County looking specifically for violations of underage drinking and nothing else. The Sheriff’s Office received a $1,000 grant from the Department of Public Safety, Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement Division, for enforcement of underage drinking laws. This money will be used to help pay for the extra patrols.
Sheriff Ely states, “Your children’s safety is always a priority. Enforcing underage drinking laws has always been a high priority for our department; the grant allows us to put extra deputies out on the road when they may be needed the most.”
Sheriff Ely reminds parents to talk with their children about underage consumption of alcohol and consumption of alcohol prior to driving and safe alternatives if they make an unfortunate decision to drink. First time offenses for minor consumption may include a fine of $187. Underage consumption by a driver (under .08) may include a fine of $297 and six month loss of license. Driving under the influence of alcohol may include a fine of up to $1,087 and six month loss of license.
Sheriff Ely would like to encourage all prom participants to take part in the safe activities that have been planned for them including lock-ins and after prom parties where alcohol will not be served.
