The Houston County Board was in an approving mood April 8 when they went along with the County Planning Commission’s recommendations and granted three conditional use permits (CUP) and a zoning variance. All of the requests had been reviewed by the planning commission at the March 27 meeting.

County Zoning Administrator Bob Scanlan reviewed the following requests with the county board:

•Randy Steinfeldt, of Houston Township, planned to expand an existing feedlot, but needed a variance of 740 feet to meet the required 1320 foot setback from an existing home. During a public hearing on the variance request there was no public objections registered. Scanlan stated, after inspecting the plans, he felt the expansion would have minimal impact to Steinfeldt’s neighbors. The variance request was unanimously approved.

•Duane Von Arx, of Houston Township, requested a CUP to operate a outfitting business on the Root River. After reviewing the CUP worksheet, which includes “findings of fact,” the planning commission recommended approving the CUP. The county board unanimously approved the request.

•Mary Agren, of Wilmington Township, requested a CUP for a bed and breakfast and vacation rental to be located in her home. The entire business would be located within her home, and according to current zoning ordinances, she could have up to five bedroom rental units in the home. After reviewing the CUP worksheet, which includes “findings of fact,” the planning commission recommended approving the CUP. The county board unanimously approved the request.

•The third CUP approved by the county board was requested by Barb Burrough of Money Creek Township. According to Scanlan, the Burroughs had their home destroyed in the August 2007 floods. A FEMA trailer had been moved in as a temporary residence. The Burroughs requested locating a permanent mobile home on the property, which would be a second residence on a 40-acre tract. The planning commission felt it was a hardship case, due to the flood, and recommended approving the CUP.
