Just as she predicted, Spring Grove/Caledonia softball coach Shelly
Anderson said Saturday’s games with La Crosse Aquinas and Onalaska
Luther would be an opportunity to measure progress for her players and
team.
“We played two quality teams with excellent pitchers,” Anderson said on
Monday after her team lost to Aquinas 10-6 and to Luther, 8-4.
In the Aquinas game, the Warriors faced an old bugaboo as Aquinas put
together an eight run second inning off a combination of hits, walks,
and errors. The Lions had started that inning with five runs of
their own.
While the Lions had more hits than the Bluegolds, they had four errors
to one for Aquinas. Jenna Schmitz had two hits and Cassie Gran
and Michelle Doering had doubles.
“The rest of the game was pretty well played. If you would throw
out the second inning for both squads, it was a 2-1 game,” Anderson
said.
In the Onalaska Luther game, Anderson started sophomore pitcher Lindsey
Bratland in her first varsity game. “She needed to get her feet
wet. We can’t go through the entire season with one pitcher,”
Anderson said. “Lindsey had a few more walks than I would have
liked. I think a lot of that had to do with Luther’s discipline
at the plate and they got some timely hits. Yet, I always felt we
were in the game,” she said.
“It was good to see different people in varsity action,” Anderson
continued. Number three hitter Miranda Lager was kept out of the
lineup as a precaution with an injury and the sophomore Doering took
her place in left field.
The Lions were ahead 3-2 after three innings when Luther brought in
Courtney Hoeg, a power pitcher who held the Lions to just one more run.
SG/C had nine hits and no errors while Luther had seven hits with three
errors. Libby Augedahl led the Lions with three hits and Schmitz
had the only base knock, a double.
A week of warmer weather is promised and may provide better conditions
for more big games. On Thursday, there is a road game at Houston
followed by a home game with rival La Crescent. The Lancers will
compete in this sub-section so this will provide a preview.
