Warriors win one, lose one in rain-shortened week PDF Print

The Caledonia baseball team picked up a win and dropped a game during another rain-shortened week. The Warriors defeated visiting Plainview-Elgin-Millville 8-2 on April 14 and then lost to Wabasha-Kellogg 15-7 on April 17.

The Warriors road the arm of junior Ryan Goetzinger, who pitched a complete game. The big right hander gave up one earned run on four hits, walked four, hit one batter and struck out five.

The home-standing Warriors scored once in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead when Goetzinger rapped out a home run.

The Warriors made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third when Goetzinger singled, moved to second when Bob Augedahl singled and scored on an RBI single by Alex Klug. Augedahl and Klug moved to second and third on a fielder’s choice and Augedahl scored on a PEM error.

PEM made it 3-1 in the top of the fourth on walk, a Warrior error and a fieler’s choice.

Caledonia came right back with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Troy Frank singled, stole second, moved to third on a single by Pat Bolduan, and both Frank and Bolduan were plated when Augedahl banged out a double, making the score 5-1.

The Warriors scored three more in the bottom of the fifth when Matt Mitchell reached first on an error and scored on an RBI double by Bolduan. Goetzinger was hit by a pitch and both Bolduan and Goetzinger scored when the PEM second baseman couldn’t handle a shot hit by Augedahl.

PEM scored one run in the top of the seventh on a fielder’s choice, a Caledonia error and a base hit.

Goetzinger led the offensive charge going 2 for 3 with a home run and scoring three times. Augedahl was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and one run scored. Klug was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Bolduan was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, Frank was 1 for 4 with one run scored, and Kody Moore had an RBI.

The Warriors built a 6-3 lead through five innings, but the visiting Eagles scored 10 runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the 15-7 win.

After two scoreless innings, the Warriors got on the board first when Klug poked one over the fence for a home run.

W-K tied the game at 1-1 when they picked up a run on two walks and two fielder’s choices.

The Warriors made it 2-1 in the fourth when Trent Meyer tripled and scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Frank.

W-K came back with two runs in the fifth on a walk and a home run to take a 3-2 lead.

But the Warriors took the lead back (6-3) in the bottom of the fifth when they scored four runs. Goetzinger reached first on a fielder’s choice, moved to second when Augedahl walked, and both runners moved up when Klug walked. Moore plated Goetzinger with a single, Augedahl scored on a W-K error, Klug scored on a base hit by Moore, and Meyer singled to score Moore.

W-K scored 10 runs in the top of the sixth when they sent 16 batters to the plate. The Eagles scored their runs on five walks, two Warrior errors, five hits, including a home run and two doubles, and one hit batter.

Caledonia scored once in the bottom of the six to pull within six runs, 13-7. But W-K scored two more in the top of the seventh for the 15-7 score.

Meyer was 3 for 4, including a triple, with one run scored, Klug was 1 for 2 with a home run, Goetzinger was 1 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Augedahl was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI, Moore was 1 for 3 with a run scored, Dustin King was 1 for 3 and Frank had an RBI.

Games cancelled

A make-up game scheduled for last Friday with Kingsland was rained out again, as was a Saturday game. They will be made up at a later date.
