Are you a student at Caledonia schools, either a current sophomore, junior or senior?
Do you have a knack for writing and a concern for all things community?
Would you like to learn from the most brilliant staff of small town
newspaperers (?) in the over 130 years of small town newspapers...ers?
Then have I got an opportunity for you.
The Caledonia Argus, the fine publication which you are now holding in your very hands, is hiring a student intern.
The candidate we are looking for should be interested in journalism.
That is not to say that he or she would make this their life’s work,
but thanks to the fine people at The Pohlad Family Foundation, the same
family who owns the Minnesota Twins, the Argus, along with several
other area newspapers, has an opportunity to hire a budding young
journalist and teach them the ropes of small town journalism.
The foundation will help offset the cost for the newspapers so it a win-win-win situation for all involved.
There is not a single newspaper office in America that won’t tell you they’re short-staffed.
There is a need, especially in this world of on-line bloggers and the
like passing for journalists, to adequately train today’s youth in the
field so that all hope is not lost for the future. The Pohlad family,
already loaded, foots most of the bill, and the enthusiastic, young,
eager to learn student journalist lands a pretty cool summer job which
pays pretty decent when you consider what you’ll be doing on a
day-to-day basis.
What will you be doing?
Thanks for asking. The candidate hired will learn all aspects of small
town newspapers from the brilliant staff mentioned previously.
You’ll learn to write effective leads, write quality journalism
stories. Learn a little bit about our web site (www.hometownargus.com).
Sorry, I should have warned you about the shameless self-promotion
about to befall upon your eyes. Oh, wait, this is all shameless
self-promotion. Brilliant.
Anyway, the student journalist will take some pictures, write some
stories, do some pagination, learn other aspects of the business like
maintaining a subscription list, and generally whatever else we have
coming at us on a week-to-week basis.
The student will have to jump right in and will learn the ropes as we go just like the rest of us.
I heard someone put it to me once that it is like dodgeball, you have
to move this way to avoid that ball, that way to avoid this ball.
Sometimes the balls all come at you all at once in this business and
you just lie down on the floor and hope they don’t hit you in the head.
Sound interesting? Apply today!
