In a show of power, pitching, and defense, the Spring Grove/Caledonia
softball team beat Lyle-Pacelli (L-P) and La Crescent in 10-run rule
games last week. The Lions had a 10 run lead after five innings
and that margin meant a victory each time without further play.
In the L-P game, the Lions did not waste any time. After pitcher
Cassie Gran started the first inning by striking out three batters,
Gran led off the SG/C half with an inside-the-park home run. The
Lions led 7-1 after two innings. Gran and Miranda Lager were 2-4. Libby
Augedahl, Aly Meyer, and Theresa Ellenz each had doubles.
Gran controlled the game from the start holding Lyle-Pacelli to two
hits with no walks and nine strikeouts as the Lions won 11-1.
On Friday, the field was not playable in Caledonia, so the Lions took
to the rode to face La Crescent and won 10-0 pounding out 15 hits.
“I’ve been really happy with our bats,” coach Shelly Anderson said.
Gran limited the Lancers to three scattered hits. Catcher Theresa
Ellenz threw out La Crescent’s attempted steals of second base in the
second and fifth innings with Libby Augedahl being on the receiving end
of the throws to tag the runners.
Ellenz had a great day at the plate with a 3-3
performance. Gran, Meyer, Sara Wold, and Amber Ideker
had two hits, each. Gran had two doubles. Anderson noted
her hitters’ patience in waiting for pitches in their zones to get
solid hits. The coach was also pleased with the balanced hitting.
The Lions had a total of one error in the games. In both games,
Gran scored the run that closed out the 10-run rule contests.
