David and Sheri Olafson are the new owners of the Crest Inn and Apartments. The couple are learning the ins-and-outs of the business from former owners Harley and Joanne Meiners.
When the Meiners’ decided to sell the business, which they operated for over 20 years, they wanted someone local.
David Olafson, who is a Caledonia native, has spent much of the past decade working on his farm, after over two decades in the military.
Sheri has been working in the hospitality industry, so the couple made perfect sense.
“It fell right into place here,” said Sheri. “I love doing this kind of work.”
The couple, who have a daughter, De Anna, who will also be working at the Crest, were looking for a business they could do together.
“We wanted to make it a family business and this is a good family business,” said Sheri.
“We wanted a local family to come on board and they’re Caledonia natives so it was a good fit,” said Harley Meiners of the Olafsons. “With their background I think it is a perfect fit.”
No major changes planned
The Olafson’s don’t plan on making too many changes, especially not any major ones.
“Oh sure, maybe some decorating stuff,” said Sheri.
“We’re definitely not going to be starting up a restaurant out here,” said David (as has been rumored). We’ll have enough to keep us busy with the apartment and hotel side of things.”
And if there is a learning curve on that side of the business, the Meiners have remained on board to help with the transition period.
“We know they’re just a phone call away,” said Sheri. “We’re glad they’re not just selling and walking away. It will help with the transition.”
The Crest is planning an open house on Sunday, June 1 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
The Crest has 20 motel units and seven apartments and is AAA approved.
