The Spring Grove/Caledonia Lions won three more conference games in a rain-shortened week.  The team swept Glenville/Emmons in a doubleheader and then 10-runned Mabel-Canton on Thursday.

In the Tuesday game, Cassie Gran got the start and led the team to a 14-4 victory in five innings.  Gran had seven strikeouts and four walks while her team had two errors behind her.

Offensively, Gran was the leading hitter with two hits in three trips.  Her home run in the third inning knocked in three runs and she scored four times.  Libby Augedhal and Jenna Schmitz were three for four, each.  Augedahl had a triple in the third inning.  She scored three times.  Schmitz had a double with five RBIs in the contest.  Amber Ideker was two for three.  Sarah Wold and Miranda Lager each had a double.

SGC 18 G-E 9

In the nightcap, coach Shelly Anderson started sophomore Kjersti Fried who got the win in the 18-9 game.  “We decided to let her get her feet wet.  After the first game, I thought our team had the offense on this day to support Kjersti.  She had a good day. She kept the ball in the strike zone so that we could have our defense make the plays.”

The 18-9 win saw the Lions knock 21 hits.  Aly Meyer and Theresa Ellenz led the hitters both going 4-for-5.  Ellenz included a double in that total.  Maria Betz was 3-for-5 with a double in the second.  Getting two hits each were Gran, Schmitz, Michelle Doering, and Ideker.

SGC 11 M-C 0

In a single game last Thursday, the Lions shut out Mabel-Canton in a five inning game, 11-0.

Gran pitched the distance giving up three hits and no walks.  The Lions played errorless ball behind her.

Augedahl led the team with a 3-for-4 night including a single, double, and a triple and scored three times. Lager had a home run in the fifth inning while Meyer was 2-3 with a triple in the fourth inning.  Also having a good night was Theresa Ellenz, who was 2-for-2 with a double in the third inning.

SGC Lions have busy schedule coming up

After an unofficial total of nine inches of rain in April, it looks like the weather will cooperate for a condensed softball schedule this week.

The Spring Grove/Caledonia Lions are unbeaten on top of the conference with pre-season favorites Houston and Hope Lutheran tied with two conference losses in second place.   In the next week, the Lions face both teams after gaining close wins in their first meetings.

Before that, the team traveled to Goodhue for a doubleheader on Monday.  On Tuesday, Hope Lutheran was to play the Lions at Caledonia.

After a break, the team enters  a 16 team tournament at La Crescent on Saturday.  The first of an expected three games was tentatively set with St. John’s Prep at 11 a.m.

Next Monday, SG/C was to travel to Houston for that big rematch.  Somewhere in this mix was a rematch with Lyle-Pacelli.

“We are in ‘control of our destiny’,” SG/C coach Shelly Anderson acknowledged.  “We are looking forward to the contests and to better weather.  We hope to maintain our numbers on offense and that our defense remains steady.”
