Over 400 triathletes will converge on the town of Houston this weekend for the 10th annual Root River Triathlon.
The event, which will be held on May 17, will start at 8:30 a.m. Organizers of the event ask that motorists give the competitors space when sharing the roadways.
“We just want people to realize that the event is taking place,” said co-race director Jennifer Evenson. “We just want them to be courteous and kind. And careful.”
The riding portion of the event will follow the canoe race. Canoes will go in at the Houston bank of the Root River. They will get out at the Mound Prairie Bridge where they will begin the bike portion of the race.
Riders will ride along Highway 21 and ride to Highway 9. From there they’ll take Highway 76 into Trail Head Park.
“The run portion of the run goes around Houston,” said Evenson. “That is where the race is taking place.”
The event keeps growing, and growing and growing.
“We’re up to 400 participants,” noted Evenson. “Each year we keep growing by an additional 20 people.
The now decade old triathlon is sponsored by many area businesses and help with organizing the event, along with several volunteers, comes in the form of Houston Lions Club members.
“We want to thank all the volunteers who help us do this,” said Evenson.
