“Celebrate, remember, fight back,” is the theme of this year’s Houston County Relay For Life scheduled for Friday and Saturday, August 1-2. Relay teams are being organized to raise funds to fight cancer through research in this walk/relay. This year’s event is at Caledonia Elementary School.

“More teams are welcome,” said co-chair Glenda Miller. “We have a goal of 30 teams this year and we hope to break last year’s record of $57,009 in donations.” Each team should have 10 walkers with each participant seeking donations supporting their walk. Teams, or their sponsors, also pay an entry fee of $10 per walker to participate.

“If you want to enter a team call me, or my co-chair Jane Schiltz,” said Miller. “Teams from anywhere in the country are welcome.”

The 2008 honorary chairperson is Kjersten Snell of Houston. New to this year’s Relay for Life celebration will be the recognition of caregivers. A caregiver is anyone who provided support in any way to someone who has cancer.

Explaining this year’s theme, Miller said, “Celebrate those who survived cancer. Remember those who fought cancer. Fight back is how to become invovled by helping in some way. This may include giving hope to others, donating to this event to support research, and having or encouraging a cancer screening test. There are endless ways to Fight Back.”

A Mardi Gras spirit is encouraged for walkers’ garb and their team site decorations. For more information, contact Glenda Miller (725-3610) or Jane Schiltz (725-2002).

Every two years, the location of the celebration rotates between Caledonia, Houston, La Crescent and Spring Grove.
