County is moving forward on appointing new county attorney

If salary negotiations can be worked out, it appears as if a person to replace out-going Houston County Attorney Rick Jackson has been chosen. The county board unanimously approved Assistant County Attorney Suzanne Bublitz as the finalist to become Houston County Attorney during the May 13 meeting.
“We interviewed several persons Monday, and felt both candidates had the experience we need,” Commissioner Tom Bjerke said. “But one of the two really rose to the top.”
“I agree,” said Commissioner Dave Corcoran. “We had two very good candidates, but Suzanne has more experience.”
Commissioner Ann Thompson added she felt Bublitz has the ability to run the department, and has worked under Jackson.”
The county board decided to form a committee, which included commissioners Larry Graf and Larry Corcoran, and county staff, to negotiate salary and other compensation issues.
If and when the county and Bublitz can come to terms, the county will advertise for an assistant county attorney to replace Bublitz.
Jackson tendered his resignation, effective May 30, 2008, at the April 1 county board meeting.
Jackson accepted a position with the Criminal Division of the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office in Rochester. He will be heading up a special prosecution trial team. He explained this move will allow him to return more to a criminal law/trial practice, which is what he really enjoys.
Jackson has served as Houston County Attorney since 2000. When former Houston County Attorney James Fabian became a judge, Jackson was one of a number of attorneys who applied for the opening. He was appointed by the county board in February 2000 to fill out the remainder of Fabian’s term. He was elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006.
