Memorial Day services scheduled

Memorial Day services will take place throughout Houston County Saturday, May 24 and Monday, May 26.
The following is a list of events taking place in the Caledonia area.
Houston County
A county-wide Memorial Day program will be held at the Veterans’ Memorial in front of the Houston County Courthouse in Caledonia on Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m.
Lt. Cmdr. Christian W. Myrah, U.S. Navy, of Spring Grove will be the keynote speaker. All American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars organizations in the county will be providing rifles at the salute to the dead. The names of veterans who have passed away since May 2007 will be read.
Brownsville
Brownsville will hold its Memorial Day program on Monday, May 26 beginning with a Memorial Service at Zion Evangelical Cemetery at 10 a.m. A program will follow at the Community Center at 10:45 a.m. At 11:30 there will be a march to the river as tribute to servicemen lost as sea. A potluck dinner will begin at 12 p.m. at the Community Center. The public is welcome.
In case of inclement weather, cemetery service and march to the river will be cancelled. Community Center ceremony and dinner will be held as scheduled.
Caledonia
There will be a Memorial Day service Monday, May 26 at the Caledonia High School Auditorium. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. and is sponsored by the American Legion Post 191.
The keynote speaker will be Major Maggie Stalka, 2004 Iraqi War veteran and major in the Army Reserves. The program will include the Posting of Colors, Opening Ceremony, the Caledonia High School Band, scholarship presentation, and TAPS.
Hokah
Memorial Day services will begin with the placing of the wreaths at 8:15 a.m. at the Root River Bridge and Convent Cemetery on Monday. The parade will be at 9 a.m. starting at City Hall and proceeding to the city park. The La Crescent eighth grade band will march. Ceremonies will then be held at the two cemeteries.
Houston
Houston’s Memorial Day observance will take place Monday, May 26 at 10 a.m. at Houston City Park.
The program will include Roll Call of the Dead, flag raising and TAPS, and the Houston High School Band and Choir will perform.
La Crescent
Memorial services will be conducted by the La Crescent American Legion Post 595 on Monday, May 26 by the color guard and firing squad at the following local cemeteries:
Dresbach, 8:30 a.m.; Dakota Catholic, 8:45 a.m.; Dakota Public, 8:55 a.m.; Hiller at Nodine, 9:15 a.m.; Nodine Lutheran, 9:25 a.m.; Toledo Cemetery, 9:45 a.m.; Prince of Peace Cemetery, 10 a.m.; Pine Creek Catholic Cemetery, 10:10 a.m.; Crucifixion Cemetery, 10:25 a.m.; South Ridge Lutheran, 10:40 a.m.; South Ridge Methodist, 10:50 a.m.; and Prospect Cemetery at 11:05 a.m.
Parade units will form on Walnut Street in front of Heth Hardware at 11:25 a.m. The parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the Legion Color Guard, Auxiliary Color Guard, Gold Star Mothers, Auxiliary Poppy Queen, La Crescent High School Band, Scouting Units, and others marching to Veterans Park. Program will begin at 11:45 am.
A chicken que dinner will be served in the Legion clubrooms following the program in Veterans Park.
New Albin
Services begin Monday, May 26 at 9:00 a.m. at the New Albin Community Center.
The Invocation will be given by Pastor Steve Hubbell with music to follow by the Kee-High Band under the direction of Mrs. Remmen.
An introduction to the Gettysburg address will be given by Joel Sires. Major John Colsch, USAF-retired will be the key-note speaker.A presentation of awards by VFW Post 5603 will follow.
Pastor Paul Burgess will give the benediction.
Spring Grove
Services for Memorial Day will be held Monday, May 26, beginning at 10 a.m. A parade will proceed at 9:45 a.m. from the school to the park. the Spring Grove High School Band will perform several selections. Carl Johnson, a Vietnam Vet. from Waakon will be the keynote speaker.
