Mary E. Hammell, 89, of rural Caledonia, died Saturday, Jan. 12, at home.
She was born on Dec. 30, 1918 in Wexford, Iowa to Patrick and Louise
(Cota) Manning. She was married on June 19, 1947 to George J. Hammell
and lived her entire married life on the family farm in Jefferson
Township, Minnesota.
She was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, serving as a
religious education board member and instructor and was a member of the
Rosary Society.
In addition to her husband, George, she is survived by five daughters:
Margaret (Tim) Nordwig, Watertown, Wis.; Anna (Gary) Meiners,
Caledonia; Phyllis (Larry) Yarber, Columbia, Ill.; Theresa (Gene)
Ostert, Green Bay, Wis.; and Donna (A.K.) Kinard, Darien, Wis.; three
sons: Patrick (Nancy) Hammell,West Bend, Wis.; Joseph (Diana) Hammell,
Caledonia; Edward (Jan) Hammell, Caledonia; 25 grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; two brothers: Leo (Mary) Manning and Jim (Kay)
Manning, all of Lansing, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. at St.
Joseph’s Church in New Albin with burial in St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the New Albin Community Center from 3 to 7 p.m. on
Sunday, Jan 13. Thornburg-Hanson Funeral Home is assisting the
family with arrangements.
