Suzanne Bublitz, who has served as assistant county attorney for the past eight years, was officially named interim Houston County Attorney during the May 20 county board meeting. Bublitz will take over for Rick Jackson, whose last day will be this Friday, May 30.
Jackson tendered his resignation, effective May 30, at the April 1 county board meeting. He accepted a position with the Criminal Division of the Olmsted County Attorney’s Office in Rochester.
Bublitz grew up in Rochester and attended Winona State University, where she received a four year paralegal degree. She then went to work in the Twin Cities as a paralegal.
“I had a cousin who was a paralegal, and I thought it seemed like an interesting profession,” Bublitz said. And once she started working as a law clerk in Hennepin County Juvenile Court, the call to become an attorney and handle criminal cases, became louder. So she continued working as a paralegal, and earned her law degree.
She arrived in Houston County in 2000, just a couple months after Jackson was appointed as interim county attorney. Jackson was appointed to replace former Houston County Attorney James Fabian, who became Third District Judge.
“Rick and I had a great working relationship,” Bublitz said. “I’ve learned a lot during the eight years I’ve served as assistant county attorney, and am looking forward to the challenges of the new position.”
Bublitz noted the new position will require more administrative work, and not as much work in the courtroom. But since a second assistant county attorney, Araysa Ashmore, was hired in March of this year, the work load has been better distributed.
“We’ve got a great staff here. I’m looking forward to continue working with them, and the other departments here. Now, we’ll have to find another assistant county attorney to take my place,” Bublitz added.
