Mother Nature, as has been her custom this spring sports season, factored into the section meet.
Originally the Section A finals were to take place on Thursday, May 29.
However, due to storms in the area, (and graduations on Friday) the
meet was re-scheduled for Saturday.
A perfect day of sun would greet the runners and the Warriors will be sending a total of five athletes to state.
The boys relay teams (made up of the same four runners in both events)
of Eddie Hodges, Andy Bauer, Isaac Fruechte and Cody Peterson qualified
in the boys 4x100 relay and the 4x200 relays.
And junior Samantha Wermager qualified in the 300M hurdles with a time
of 47.90. She also qualified for the triple jump event with a distance
of 33-11 3/4.
Wermager looked to be a shoe-in for the 100M hurdle event as well, but took a fall during the event.
“She took a bad fall while leading in the 100 hurdles and that took her
out of that race,” said head coach Paul Stevens. “She will be
running prelims in the hurdles in the afternoon on Friday. The
finals for the hurdles will be late on Saturday along with the
triple jump for girls.”
The State Track and Field Meet is held at Hamline University in St.
Paul. Class A boys and girls will run prelims after 3:00 p.m. on Friday
and the finals for Class A will also be held after 3:00 p.m. on
Saturday.
Girls season
The Caledonia/Spring Grove track team will lose some quality runners on the girls’ side.
“We had some outstanding senior girls finish their track careers in
style,” said Stevens. “Sarah Colleran, Molly Furlong, and Molly
Schaller will be missed greatly next year. Sarah Colleran
and Molly Furlong have been very good sprinters and relay people for us
over the years. Molly Schaller has done very well in the shot and
discus also.”
Despite only sending one competitor to the cities, the girls track team finished well at Sections.
“Our girls team placed second overall in the team portion,” said
Stevens. “We had excellent efforts from all the girls the made it to
the section meet. The girls 4x800 relay team broke their own school
record that they had set in the sub-section meet. All these
girls are very young and very determined to do better next year.”
Boys
The boys qualified two relay teams by time and they will be running at
state. In the 4x100 relay, Hodges, Bauer, Fruechte and Peterson
ran a time of 44.21.3.
Those same four runners ran a time of 1:32.14 in the 4x200 relay.
“Our section has some excellent sprint relay teams for both girls and
boys this year,” continued Stevens. “This makes it hard to get to
the state meet, but it does bring out the best which also happened to
lead to the times needed to qualify.”
