Dorchester hit hard by weekend’s floods PDF Print

On Monday Kim Crawford and Ernie Engan were surveying what was left of their respective damaged homes in Dorchester, Iowa.

The flooding this past weekend came through with such force that over a dozen mobile homes were swept away by the rushing waters. All that’s left of the now unfit structures is piles of debris where homes once stood.

“We lost everything,” said Crawford. “My brother (Engan) is over there  cleaning up what’s left of his home too.”

The water rushed through on Sunday and removed the homes from their foundations. Some residents had to be rescued from the safety of tree limbs as the water rushed all around them.

Dorchester saw some 10 inches of rain fall in a few hour period.

Jeannie Homewood considers herself among the lucky Dorchester residents.

As she was manuevering a hose which was pumping feet upon feet of water out of the basement of the bar she and her husband Dennis own, Homewood said simply “I am lucky. Other people have it a lot worse then me. All I have is mostly water in the basement.”

It will be a while before life returns to normal in Dorchester. On Monday the clean up continued.

With the forecast calling for rain later this week, the residents of the Iowa town are preparing for another storm.

I say start a collection for Ernie Engan. Within the past decade, he's lost his farm, he divorced and he lost his son in a tragic and freaky accident. Ernie has started over three times within the past decade. Isn't anyone out there able to start some sort of collection for this man?? He never asks for anything and is a great person.
