The Caledonia Ambulance service is offering a 40-hour First Responder Course.
The course will begin on June 24 and classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with classes being held on the occasional Saturday.
The Caledonia Ambulance Service is a certified training site and Ambulance Director Mike Tornstrom along with Tracy Heaney and Joanie Schmidt will be teaching the classes.
“We will also have several guests,” noted Tornstrom. “This is a good opportunity for people to learn the fundamentals of EMS but is a shorter and cheaper class.”
Originally it was thought that the class might be limited to 10 individuals. However, interest has been high and Tornstrom is planning to open the course up to as many as 15 or 20 people.
“If interest from Brownsville, Hokah and Eitzen is there we’ll be extending it,” said Tornstrom. “This is a good class for the core EMS.”
The course follows the current National Standard Curriculum developed by the Department of Transportation. Students will learn the fundamentals of EMS, core knowledge of medical care, skills and attitudes to function in the capacity of a first responder.
“This is an entry level course into the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) field,” said Tornstrom.
