Six members of the 2008 Spring Grove/Caledonia Lions were honored by
the Southeast Conference this spring. Five were named
all-conference and one player was named honorable mention.
Honorable mention
Amber Ideker was chosen honorable-mention. The senior
was a .277 hitter who only committed four errors from her second
base position.
All-conference
Cassie Gran won her fourth all-conference award to go with an honorable
mention recognition and her career has one more year to go. She
led her team in hitting with a .483 average.
“Her all-conference honors are really impressive,” said her coach
Shelly Anderson. “I can rave about her all day and I know she
would hate that.” In addition, Gran had an 18-4 record with an
ERA of 1.07 and 149 strikeouts.
Theresa Ellenz capped her first year of catching on the varsity with
the all-conference honor. “She read the hitters so well and her
arm was so strong that opposing teams stopped running on her. She
really stepped in where we needed her.” Ellenz hit .421 and
tied for the team lead in doubles and was just one off the RBI lead.
Libby Augedahl had a strong year at shortstop with a .936 fielding
average and had the third best batting average. “Libby is a
tremendously talented athlete who plays her position so well. Her
leadership is by example because she plays so hard,” Anderson
said. She was second in RBI and led the team in bases on
balls and a whopping on-base percentage of .695.
“Jenna Schmitz was a little bit of a surprise for us with her play in
certerfield,” her coach said. “Yes, she hit .384 for us but it
was her fielding that developed her into a good varsity player.
She made tremendous progress. Who will ever forget that
tremendous catch she made in certerfield against Cotter in the section
tournament?”
Aly Meyer was playing a brand new position this year and she responded
with an all-conference season. The sophomore first baseman “kept
learning and improving and she was the second best hitter on the team,”
noted her coach. Anderson recalled that her confidence in Meyer
reached the point where, “I felt confident when she came to bat.
That’s high praise for a sophomore and a first year starter.”
Spring Grove/Caledonia was the conference champion this year with a 9-1 record and a 19-5 overall record.
