Mother Nature cooperated and a big crowd was on hand to watch former
townteam great Gordy Bauer throw out the first pitch during the second
annual Caledonia American Legion Baseball Tournament this past
Saturday.
Southland, which placed second in the Minnesota State High School
Tournament earlier this June, topped a very tough Blooming Prairie
team, 7-6, in extra innings.
Southland and Blooming Prairie dominated the eight-team tournament,
with the Rebels coming out of their bracket with three wins without a
loss. BP also waltzed through their bracket, out-scoring their
opponents 15-0, in three straight wins.
The two teams from “out west” battled to a 6-6 tie after seven innings,
requiring an extra frame. Southland was able to load the bases in the
bottom of the eighth, and then with two out, a full count and bases
loaded, a sharp grounder was hit to the BP shortstop, who misfired on
his throw to first, and Southland scored the winning run.
Local team wins one
Caledonia won their first game of the tournament, and then dropped two straight games.
The local nine topped Byron 3-0, as Kody Moore threw a gem of a game at
the Bears. Moore limited Byron to just two hits, walked two, and struck
out eight in the five-inning game.
Caledonia scored once in the first and two more in the fourth. Cole
O’Heron walked, and scored on a double by Moore in the first inning.
Caledonia picked up two more runs in the fourth when Moore and Kevin
Voight both singled, Moore scored on a fielder’s choice and Voight was
plated on an RBI single by Mike Ideker.
Caledonia lost in the second round, 13-3 to Ellsworth. The club from
across the river scored 10 unanswered runs in the first four innings.
Caledonia got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Voights
singled, Bobby Augedahl tripled, and scored on a ground out by Adam
O’Heron.
Ellsworth countered with three more in the top of the fifth, and
Caledonia scored one more in the bottom of the frame. Cole O’Heron
singled, moved to second on a base hit by Pat Bolduen and was plated on
a single by Moore.
Caledonia was shutout 5-0, in their final game of the day, when they
ran into a very tough Blooming Prairie team. The local nine was limited
to just one hit, by Moore, and only had three men reach base.
“It was a great tournament, and a very entertaining finish in the final
game,” tournament director Danny Tweten said. “We had a lot of very
dedicated volunteers helping to keep everything running smoothly…and it
didn’t hurt that the weather cooperated,” he added.
