The battle of the top two boys basketball teams in the Three Rivers
Conference took place last Friday night in Caledonia. The results of
contest between the Warriors and Plainview-Elgin-Millville didn’t go
the way of the local cagers, however, as the visiting Bulldogs clubbed
CHS 69-39.
“PEM has a good team, and we didn’t shoot well,” coach Josh Diersen
said. “PEM is tall and they play a very good pressing and trapping
defense. We shot just 28 percent from the field, (two of 15 for 13
percent from three point land), and made just five of nine free throws
(55 percent). You can’t beat a good team when you’re shooting that
poorly.”
PEM took control of the game from the outset. And when Kody Moore got
into foul trouble midway through the first half, the Bulldogs started
padding their lead. They led by 13 points, 28-15 at the half.
Things didn’t get any better for the home-standing Warriors in the
second half, as PEM kept the defensive pressure on, and Moore fouled
out of the game at the 11 minute mark.
“We just didn’t have it Friday night,” Diersen said. “The flow of the
game wasn’t there. The kids battled. They never gave up. But we were so
cold. We had 37 rebounds. So we were working hard on the boards. We
just couldn’t put the ball through the hoop.”
Ryan Goetzinger and Craig Loeffler led the Warriors with eight points
each. Goetzinger had 10 rebounds, while Loeffler had six. Moore had
seven points and five rebounds before fouling out. Alex Klug added six
points, while Bobby Augedahl had four points, and Kyle Runningen and
Cody Haugstad had three points each.
“I guess it’s good to get a bad game like this out of the way early in
the season,” Diersen said. “It’s much better to have a game like this
now and not around tournament time. We’ll look at the film and
hopefully, the guys can learn something from it.
“The TRC is tough this year. We’ve got to play well every night. And
we’ve got our work cut out for ourselves playing six games in the next
two weeks,” the coach added.
The Warriors took on a very good Chatfield team Tuesday night after
this issue of the paper went to press. They will host Fillmore Central
Thursday night before ending the busy week with a non-conference game
with Winona Cotter Saturday night at the local gym.
The loss dropped the Warriors’ record to 7-3.
