It’s only a drill PDF Print

If you were wondering what that black smoke was billowing from just behind the AmericInn on Thursday night, it was a drill which offered training to several area fire departments and was located in Caledonia. Firefighters from Pine Island, Houston, Hokah, Caledonia and Spring Grove took part in the drill. The training was conducted by Minnesota Energy. It offered firefighters the chance to hone their skills in dealing with natural gas leaks. Simulated events were a natural gas leak on a car. During the burning of the car, firefighters had to attempt to reach the car and open a door to check to see if anyone was inside. The burning car drill simulated someone running over a gas main.                                        Photos by Daniel McGonigle

I am a retired firefighter with 30 years on the Las Vegas Fire Department. More firefighters are injured at drills than at fires each year. After looking at all the photos of the week my question is this.
Where is the backup line from a secondary water source for the protection of those firefighters if something were to happen to the one in their hands?

In regards to Mr. Heimerdinger. There are two backup lines off to either side of this car. We take great pride in safty and would never overlook something as simple as a backup line....... Also there are two trucks pumping so even if one of them were to go down we would still have water.

unfortunatly you can't see there is a second 13/4 line as backup , also there is a second unit on hand , the hydrants maintain 90 psi at the nozzle had the truck failed , there was a manned deadman control 30 feet from the gas supply there was a second manned deadman disconnect 100 feet away, this was a fully accredited course put on by certified instructors from both minnesota energy and northern natural gas, we would be glad to have you share your knowledge with the 50 firefighters and instructors on hand that evening, also please note the full protective gear properly worn in the photo
