If you were wondering what that black smoke was billowing from just behind the AmericInn on Thursday night, it was a drill which offered training to several area fire departments and was located in Caledonia. Firefighters from Pine Island, Houston, Hokah, Caledonia and Spring Grove took part in the drill. The training was conducted by Minnesota Energy. It offered firefighters the chance to hone their skills in dealing with natural gas leaks. Simulated events were a natural gas leak on a car. During the burning of the car, firefighters had to attempt to reach the car and open a door to check to see if anyone was inside. The burning car drill simulated someone running over a gas main. Where is the backup line from a secondary water source for the protection of those firefighters if something were to happen to the one in their hands?
