While it was a slow start for the Lady Warrior basketball team in their
victory over PEM, the team would eventually turn a one-point half time
advantage into a 56-49 ‘w’. “We started a little sluggish offensively,
but this is something we are working hard on in taking our time and
recognizing what the other team is doing,” said girls basketball coach
Scott Sorenson. “I felt we did a great job of this, our shots
were just not falling in the first half.”
Sorenson was pleased with how his team played defensively in the first stanza.
“Defensively we played well in the first half,” he said. “Holding
them to only 20 points was critical. They are a high
scoring offense and I felt we did a great job of shutting them down for
the most part.
Things turned around for the Warriors in the second half as they found their offensive rhythm.
“In the second half we came out and executed our offense to
perfection,” said Sorenson. “We were able to make a 1 point lead
a 15 point lead rather quickly, as we were patient and waited for the
defense to make a mistake or get out of position and we made the extra
pass to get an open shot.”
Much of that was because the girls found their stroke.
“In the second half we started to knock down the shots that were not falling in the first half,” said Sorenson.
The team also found their groove on the other side of the ball as well.
“Defensively we continued to play solid, forcing them into a faster
game than they wanted to play,” said Sorenson. “We talk about it
a lot in that we can play solid defense every night out and we really
do when we talk to each other on defense.”
The win places the Warriors in a good position within the conference.
“This was a big win for us on the road and gives us sole possession of
2nd place in the conference 1 loss behind Kingsland,” said Sorenson.
Cassie Gran led the Warriors with 12 points. Libby Augedahl scored 11
points and grabbed four rebounds. Megan King scored 10 points and had
eight assists.
Laquita Becker scored six points and Sarah Colleran added eight points.
