Is that old saxophone from your high school band days tucked away in the back of a closet somewhere? Is your trombone gathering dust underneath your bed?
Do you still have the itch to play but don’t have the outlet?
How about community band?
Each Tuesday members of the community gather for an hour practice at the middle school/high school band room. They are a part of the community band.
“We have a lot of fun,” said band director Carrie Erickson. “The group keeps getting better and better each year.”
The community band is perfect for those individuals who still have the desire to play music.
“It’s pretty low key,” said Erickson. “This gives people the chance to keep playing music.”
Not too late to join the band
“Oh yeah we still have room,” noted Erickson when asked if she’s still looking for members.
While the number of participants varies on any given Tuesday, the director notes that on average there are about 30 musicians at the practices.
“We started on the 10th of June and it is open to anybody,” said Erickson. “Anyone who wants to join may.”
The members range in age from eighth grade all the way up to...well, middle age.
“I don’t dare guess how old our oldest member is,” joked Erickson.
The band is planning a concert on August 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the Gazebo in Caledonia.
“There will be a variety of music,” said Erickson. “A couple of marches, some fan fares, a Broadway musical number, a symphonet.”
Erickson won’t be able to direct the musical as she is getting married.
“Dustin Moberg (middle school band director at Caledonia) will be directing,” she said. “I won’t be in town that week, unfortunately.”
The show will be free and open to the public.
