During the month of June, through self-reflection and examination, Caledonia area elementary principal Connie Hesse learned one thing about herself. “I know I don’t want a career as a grant writer.”
The principal spent much of that month writing and editing several grants totalling over $235,000.
Title grants
Caledonia Area Schools have been allocated $164,793 for use in their various Title programs.
The Title I program had a total allocation of $116,329 down from 2007-08’s $123,637.
The money will be used for administrative use, professional development, parent involvement and homeless allocations.
“The remaining Title I budget will be used for salary and benefits,” noted Hesse. “There is no money available for supplies and materials for the upcoming school year.”
Caledonia Area Elementary, St. John’s and St. Mary’s will receive Title I services during the school day as pull-out sessions for both math and reading throughout the 2008-09 school year.
Title IIA:
This program was allocated $45,123 up fom the 2007-08 allocation of $44,885.
“The public school will use their allocation for class-size reduction and the parochial schools will use their budget for travel, conferences and conventions,” noted Hesse.
Title IV:
The Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant saw an allocation of $3,341 down from 2007-08 $4,169.
$71,000 grant
Hesse also wrote a State Aid Alternative Delivery of Specialized instructional Services grant to the Office of School Improvement and Accountability.
The grant, which totals $71,325, will be used for salaries and wages (and cannot be used to provide benefits as part of the parameters of the grant).
If the grant is approved, the district would employ a half-time reading specialist and a half-time emotional behavioral disorder teacher. The grant also requests a paraprofessional to provide support to small groups of students and to use research based computerized programs to provide reading interventions.
The district should hear back sometime in late July whether or not they were awarded the grant.
