Midway through the school year two years ago, Interstate Brands Corp., based in Iowa, came to the Caledonia school district and asked to back out of their winning bread bid.

“They were having all kinds of logistics issues with delivery,” said Superintendent Mike Moriarty.

As they approached the district to back out of the winning bid at that time, Moriarty was surprised to see them submit a bid this year.

However, their bid was not the winning bid for the bread contract for the upcoming school year.

In 2008-2009, Caledonia children will enjoy Sara Lee baked breads and grains. Sara Lee will distribute from their location in La Crosse.

Bids were broken down based on what was being prepared, for example how much for 24 oz. wheat sandwich bread or for hotdog white buns per dozen.

While Sara Lee wasn’t the cheapest in all of the categories, they were in most. They were also the lowest bidder in the two most important categories, wheat sandwich bread and white whole grain bread.

Those breads are used the most throughout the school year.

Dairy products

The only bid submitted to the district to provide their dairy products was from Ziebell’s foods. A 1% 1/2  pint carton of milk will be $0.218. The price for chocolate skim milk is the same. Skim milk per 1/2 pint carton was bid at $0.201. One-percent milk per gallon was bid at $3.419.

Each delivery will be assessed a fuel surcharge which is currently $2.00 through Ziebell’s foods.

Gasoline/fuel oil bids

Kwik Trip was the winning bidder for the gasoline/fuel oil for the 2008-2009 school year.

The bid reflects the posted pump price on July 15, 2008 of $3.929.

Subtracted from the winning bid is the .22 cent gasoline tax. A .06 cent discount per gallon is also applied to the price.

The net price per gallon to the district is $3.649. This is a fluctuating price.

Board approves health and safety attachment

“This is an annual board approval we do with the summer levy,” said Superintendent Mike Moriarty.

The board approved the Health and Safety attachment 99 and will forward the document onto the Department of Education.

The document addresses issues relating to Health and Safety. The approval of the levy allows the district to utilize $50,000 to $60,000 for such things as replacing some door ways that were deemed to be in need of replacement as they are not up to fire code. It also has in the past provided the district with machine guards on various equipment in their shop classes among other safety related items.

The district must review its health and safety hazards and plans and validates the information.

•The district approved contract services with Hiawatha Valley Education District for the upcoming school year.

•Truth in taxation hearings have been scheduled for December 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the elementary media center.
