The Mississippi River cities of Brownsville, Hokah and La Crescent have signed a proclamation celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, which makes up the eastern border of Houston County.

Cities along the upper Mississippi River are acknowledging the importance of the refuge to their communities by proclaiming 2024 as the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge Year, and celebratory events will take place all year.

The Upper Mississippi River refuge is a habitat for nature. In this picture between Brownsville and La Crescent, there is an eagle's nest, a beaver dam and scores of birds. 

Tundra Swans migrating south-2

What an amazing opportunity to witness the impressive concentration of thousands of tundra swans on their migratory route south. Each fall, the Mississippi River valley becomes a migration corridor as the swans move from their northern summer homes to warmer, southern wintering grounds. These pictures were taken about two miles south of Brownsville.

The J. Andrew Eckstein has a home port of St. Louis, Missouri, but was recently on the Upper Mississippi River north of Brownsville.

Brownsville was graced with the presence of dancing Northern Lights in April 2023.

Wildcat Park and Landing in Brownsville is part of the Upper Mississippi River refuge and has brochures on the 100th Anniversary. Owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, it is managed by the Houston County Board of Commissioners.
